Artist Statement

In January of 2019 Central Wyoming College is hosting Bryce Giesmann’s thesis exhibition called Forlorn Terroir. This series of photos serve as metaphors for my personal experiences struggling with mental disorders of depression, anxiety, and sleep apnea. I have been using red wine, a depressant, and other household chemicals to develop 4 x 5” black and white film - a mixture which has been named "Winenol" by other photographers. I also have been adding doctor prescribed pharmaceuticals, vitamin supplements and body fluids to my “Winenol”. The agitation of the film takes place in a pan and is done in a variety of ways. Whether it is the trace of scratch, blemishes, fingerprints or the use of a depressant to develop the negatives, this process is a unique way for me to create anxiety in my work.
